Two comments:1) The original poster was asking about these formats as audio-only formats. I think there is little doubt that they will fail abysmally here.
2) As far as movies go, there already exists a higher-performing audio format. It's called DTS and it is an abysmal failure also. There are fewer than 500 DTS titles out of over 50,000 DVDs released. Probably only 0.01% of all DVD users even know what DTS is, let alone actually know how to access that soundtrack.
An even higher performing audio format for movies is the answer to the question that absolutely nobody is asking (not even we crazy audiophiles). When was the last time you finished watching a DVD and said to yourself, "That kind of sucked. It would have been so much better if they'd used linear PCM for the soundtrack."?
