I recently picked up a HK DVD22, which BTW, is an excellent value for the money IMO. I have the both Tosh 4960 and 3980, as well as a Rotel 971 and recently sold my Philips SACD1000 (un-modded).The HK beats them in redbook playback hands down. I am surprised this player appears to have been overlooked. Picked it up new, direct from HK via ebay for $89. The player is very smooth and is more than competent in both detail and soundstage. And, the simple mods I did (internal dampening, upgraded power-cord and RCA jacks), had a noticable improvement.
The thing I am surprised with, is that it plays DVD-A discs. I had read thet only the DVD33 had that ability.
So my question is, is it possible that even though I am hearing the cd, the player is not truley decoding in DVD-A?
