Have a look at diyaudio.com and similar forums about the best sounding opamps.I am afraid that sound card makers used the cheapest parts that seem to conform to what is used in pro audio, not hi fi audio where there is a consensous about the better sounding opamps.
If one wants to just play wav files, Foobar is one of the best. There is a consensous in this forum also.
