Better to post in the Digital Asylum. Optical can be subject to jitt more than coax but is less prone to RFI/EMI interference. This applies when listening to std. CDs (PCM). Coax RCAs can be a better connector too and optical cables are often more fragile. For Dolby Digital, the signal is delivered in packets much like internet protocol and you should not hear much if any difference. Yes you need the analog cables for DVD-A. Even for audio on CDs sometimes an analog direct mode on the rec'r or preamp taking an analog source (e.g. DVD/CD player) may sound best.
