It's more or less MLP with a piggy-backed Dolby Digital lossy track for backward compatibility.
The obvious reason that the MLP name was not adopted by Blu-Ray is due to its too close association with DVD-Audio. This wouldn't sit well with Sony/Philips and their DSD/SACD format. To get around this, Dolby came up with a new name to appease S/P and provided the mostly non-audio focused crowd (movie watchers) with a recognizable brand name (Dolby, who actually licenses MLP).
