I was looking at the Arcam DV79, but the lack of a group button on the remote would be a real killer for me (i like listening to 2ch tracks even though as you know my system is fully m-ch capable)i would strongly suggest you listen to the Panasonic DVD-S97 - i am really impressed with this. Maybe just a tad too brash to be considered "high end", and low level details may be a bit lacking, but the overall sound is "right" in a way that none of the denons have managed to achieve (except for the denon dvd-a1/dvd-9000, which is still my favourite DVD-A player).
mine hasn't even completed the burn-in phase, but already sounds better than the rp82.
what surprised me was the quality of the on-board DD and DTS decoding. as you know, i am very particular about this and have consistently been disappointed by on-board decoders on players. The decoding quality, based on a casual listen, is top notch and almost on par with my cary. DPL II is a bit veiled, but I've also noticed that on the Cary, but i don't know of any other player that supports DPL II so it's a bonus.
at it's price level, it's almost like stealing candy from a baby, i feel like i should perhaps offer more money to panasonic.
PS - haven't tried HDCD (this player does not fully support HDCD, lacks Peak Extend, which as far as I'm concerned negates the whole point of HDCD). Also haven't tried the Remaster/upsampling modes, but as you know I am not a big fan of resampling.
Finally the player supports 192/24 on the digital out, but haven't really tried it.
