Mp3’s suckI’m typing this while listening to my Vinyl version of Sting Nothing Like The Sun playing through my AT OC9MLO/II MMF5, Luxman C-02, Phono straight, Mo2 amp, and Merlin 4 B+ speakers.
Received and IPOD for Christmas.
Been since downloading my 600 CD’s to I tunes At 320 Settings.
They all suck.
If you listen through the ear buds its O.K.
If you listen through car stereo or the home stereo system it sucks.
I have spent the last 3 days trying to find the perfect MP3 settings. Downloaded the best MP3 decoder LAME 3.96 Even at preset insane it sucks although better than the Itunes Encoder.
Tried the lossless Itunes encoder. It sucks.
But I did stumble across quite a gem in my quest. Its called Exact Audio Copy or EAC.
Its rips CD’s to Wave files, and does it insuring that the CD player has no distortion or errors. It performs better than the Itunes ripper, and better than any other ripper program I have.
When I say this I mean it sounds better using this tool than any of the others.
I have come to the conclusion that if you want to listen to things off your computer hard drive then it has to be WAVE files or better. Lossless files don’t cut it. MP3 files with Joint Stereo can be detected compared to Stereo mode due tot the fact that the location cues are lost. Although as I said the sound of MP3’s suck anyways, but I wanted to lay to rest that joint stereo and stereo are non detectable, They are defiantly detectible.
Now I have been recording my Lp’s to hard drive, and before when I had a Goldring cart that did not track well the distortion was amplified 2 fold when recorded to a WAV file. After using my OC9 my hard drive recordings, and the CD’s produced from them are amazing, almost like John Ellison said non detectable, but not quite, but very very close.
I tried MP3 ing some LP recorded wav files to MP3, and they sounded much better than any oter MP3 files I have but they still suck.
I’m thinking that with a 40 gig hard drive in the IPOD and over 300 gigs on my hard rive, whatever I don’t have on LP I will rip as a wav file from CD, and I will have a very nice jukebox for home and some 30 LPs sounding very nice on the IPOD, which I can plug in anywhere I choose.
Well back to my point MP3’s suck. I’m thinking kids these days don’t even k now why we listened to music in the 1st place. It was the great enveloping sound. This is definatley not obtainable by MP3, its impossible, they suck. Ringing sounds nthat will drive you out of a room. Even the lossless stuff loses something. Location cues, air etc. Well I’m done 3 days of intense listening and I’m convinced why I listen to vinyl now in the 1st place.
Although vinyl ripped to the hard drive in wav files are great , andCD’s ripped with EAC sound pretty good. (Much better than ripped with Itunes to wav files).
Whoops Stings done, Time to put on maybe Steely Dan Katy Lied MFSL Vinyl s
See Yah,My 2cents worth
Thanks for letting me vent after my research.
Enjoy The Music
