If you're using the 5.1 playlist, the player is sending the six different signals to the six different outputs. If you only configure/connect your system to only look for the FL and FR, you will get part of the recording. On some, you will only miss ambience. On others, you may completely lose the lead vocal (if it is isolated in the center channel) or lose backing vocals or a particular guitar. Something like Queen or Flaming Lips would be unlistenable.If your receiver is set to synthesize surround sound, you may still get something out of all your speakers, but it will be a subset of the music on the disk.
