i think that this is one of the best albums ever released. the vocal arrangements, the passion, the music, everything to me is absolutely perfect.listening to it, at parts, feels to me like an ausral celebration of life - everything from the playful avant-garde instrumentation that you mentioned, the at times silly, but highly clever lyrics, to the gospel-like tracks and repeating modes throughout the album. i love that it uses a 3-movement structure. i really, really think that this is the greatest piece of work that brian wilson has ever done. and, like was stated before, mike love is the reason it never came out way back when - his reaction was the same as yours.
givce it time and leave your expectations at the door and hear it virgin ears, if you will.
there's something magical on that record.
oh, and btw - i love indie rock and HATE yoshimi battles the pink robots.
