I had a discussion with an MDG representative some time ago, and he told me that all their 2+2+2 recordings are produced in a way that they can be played back through a 5.1 setup without the need for any modifications. This is constantly checked during the mixing/production process: they have a speaker setup in their studios that allows them to instantly switch from 2+2+2 to 5.1 to stereo to ensure compatibility. As a relatively small company, MDG know that they would be ill-advised to release any discs that are not compatible to the de facto standard. AFAIK, they don't make a secret of their recording technology, and are willing to share their knowledge with studios interested in producing 2+2+2 recordings.Again: It is not necessary to turn off the center or LFE speaker. If you're happy with 5.1, leave everything the way you have it now. If you like to experiment, and have the possibility to place two additional speakers above your front speakers, give 2+2+2 a try.
And, just in case you haven't done so, if you like classical music at all, try to get hold of one or more of their discs. Really great stuff.
