Installment 9 is the story of Duke Ellington's band's transformative Newport Jazz Festival performance in 1956.
To distill it all into two sentences:
Before the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, the Big Bands were dying out because their previous business model of providing music for social dancing was no longer relevant. But after the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, Big Bands had a new business model, of playing virtuosic music for a seated audience that had come to hear the music.
Highly recommended.
