Looks tricky to access the potentiometer to clean with the top off. Not sure what the sides or bottom look like?
Otherwise I'd hazard a guess that the volume knob on the front is held on by a set screw. If you remove the knob from the shaft you'll likely find the potentiometer assembly is held in place by a hex nut against the faceplate/chassis. Seeing the slack in those wires I'll take another guess that if you remove the hex nut the whole potentiometer assembly can be pushed into the unit slightly to clear the faceplate. Once loose you might be able to get to the pot for cleaning.
Beautiful looking unit. I'd be sweating and holding my breathe taking my tools to it.
