Hi all. I'm getting whats closer to a rumble than a hum from my deck when its playing records and wondering whats causing it.
The specifics-
Deck- Reloop Turn 5
Pre- Cambridge Duo
Cart- VM 540ML
All connected with good quality shielded RCA leads.
Now, there is no hum when the platter is turning and everything powered up, it only hums in gaps between tracks, and usually when playing around 80dB. You can't hear any hum from the setup when not spinning a disk.
The deck and pre share the same grounded power outlet so there shouldn't be any ground loop. I'm just wondering if the noise isn't ground hum but literally a rumble from the cart?
Thoughts?
Follow Ups:
the stylus is not playing? My Technics and BO BeoGram 8000 have this.
Can you stop the platter and place the stylus on the LP briefly to see if there is any hum?
What you describe kinda makes me think it's cartridge related too. Or head/arm wiring.
You said it doesn't hum when just platter is spinning, and audible between tracks. So, no cartridge engaged, no hum. Must be somewhere between the stylus tip and the preamp?
Steel trap thinking has got me in trouble before. So, I could be dead wrong.
I changed the headshell and while not entirely gone, the hum is far more subdued.
I had an AT LH11H and standard wires were extremely tight (not touching) to achieve the correct overhang.
The carts are coils and can pick up magnetic fields for sure. If you can short the inputs to your phono preamp, that would remove any noise contribution from the cart, That way you can tell how much of the noise comes from the rest of the system and how much is picked up by the cart.
Single ended systems, like you are running, share ground among the whole system by the RCA connection shields. So you need to consider the system as a whole when looking at where ground loops may exist. I bring that up since you didn't mention what the phono preamp RCA outs are plugged into and how that device is wired to recieve it's power. All of it matters with a single ended system.
Ah- the cart is more than a metre from the pre, so that's not it. All source equipment come from the same power conditioner.
The pre is cabled to my integrated and all the RCA sockets are capped save for those in use. No harm in shorting them as the caps are pocket change.
The integrated is fed from a hi power DC blocker, but same double wall socket with same ground. In essence, all kit is fed from the same wall socket and ground, however NOTHING else hums. Not even the transformers on the amp.
I had the same issue on the previous pre amp, but didn't have it when using the built in pre-amp on a different deck....
First, you need to figure out whether the noise is in fact rumble or hum. Hum is a steady monotone at 60Hz or 120Hz. Rumble can only happen when the TT platter is spinning and would likely worsen if the stylus is down on an LP. If it really is hum, then the first thing I would do is to bypass both your power conditioner and your "hi power DC blocker" (whatever that is). Just put those components aside and plug everything direct into that single wall socket, and then let us know what happens.
