So what I thought was static discharges turned out to be something about the Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge. I swapped every thing out. Everything. It was the cartridge, randomly blowing off firecrackers during the playing of a record.
And I bought it a year or two ago when I was gearing up to build my last turntable, so it can't be in warranty if it ever was. And where would I send it anyway, Japan?
The good news is that I screwed in an Ortofon OM5s and I love it. It has "something" that other cartridges don't have, as does my Dual Ortofon elliptical in my busted Thorens. Its sound has a reality that fits my reality.

But having said that, let me say this:
The OM 5S in my system is kinda hot around 300Hz, like a cheap phono, and I could do without that.

I just looked up the OM40 stylus. 650 bucks. For a bleepin' needle. I guess you've lived a very successful life, and good for you.
But seriously, folks, the higher up that styli get, it appears that the more articulate the high frequencies get. I kinda don't care about high frequencies. If you're sitting in a concert hall, you don't hear many high frequencies.
Just ordered a new stylus for my OM20. 156 euro incl. shipping from Thakker Germany, phew! Records wear if you play them often and so do stylii. I have an OM10 stylus for the scratched pop/rock records. A couple of years ago i would exceed the recommended VTF, i quit doing that. 1.5 gram VTF as recommended by Ortofon.

I am an Ortofon fan. My Cadenza Bronze cartridge sounds great and I believe the Replicant 100 stylus considerably lessens surface noise. As soon as I win the lottery I will replace the Cadena Bronze with the Ortofon Verismo.
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
I had the same reaction when I replaced a long-past-retirement Shure V15 Type V with an OM-10. I got the Ortofon because it fit my modest budget, but I was not expecting how much I enjoyed listening to it. It has the same "house sound" that I remember from a college roommate's Ortofon many years ago. Different table, different speakers, different acoustic environment, same signature sound. I remember liking that Ortofon in college, and apparently that hasn't changed.
I just recently read that the " house sound " of ortofon was high detail. which makes sense to me , thinking the cost of living in the home market is not cheap, so any consumer probably has nice equipment that can handle what can be a negative in some fine systems . I don't know if they subscribe to the European high fidelity code requirements , but they certainly compete against those products.
As an owner of a suspended belt drive design, where the knock on them is being less detailed, more lush in the presentation, adding a highly detailed cart is probably a good combination of strengths.
one thing about ortofon , they don't let you cheap out when it come to stylus replacement time, you are essentially buying an entire new cart and the alignment, save for a bit of plastic that is retained. Rega does't even bother selling MM replacement styli. .
I like the simpler amplification path of a MM, and the conveyance of changing a worn tip. I had to send away to Japan for tips, my MM cart is so old, and I decided to buy two, so that I might compare one against the other to determine wear. but when I tried both , one sounded better, so my plan failed.
that event has me looking for a cart where I can buy OEM replacements, or perhaps recognizing that alignment is so critical that, replacing just the consumable part of the signal generator no longer aligns with my system's needs. but less money is always attractive when it comes to consumable needs , and ears are always so willing to be flexible about performance needs, unlike say , cheap brake pads or budget parachutes.
