Excellent sounding out of the box, with a slightly anemic midrange and bass. I was on a $300 budget, and got one from a home theatre store for $250. I replaced the JRC opamps with Burr-Browns, and replaced about 30 capacitors with Wima and Nichicon Muse KZ. Great bang for the buck. It betters the NAD 541, which I had also tweaked, and had for about 5 years until the laser gave out.My System:
NAD C350 integrated amp, majorly revamped with Nichicon Muse, Elna Cerafine, and Wima capacitors, Vishay metal film resistors, and some point-to-point wiring with silver-clad copper.Tannoy MX-2's with RelCaps and Mills resistors, on Lovan stands.
Marantz CD5001.
Nordost Solar Wind cabling.
The NAD integrated is a good design, but comes from the factory with some poor quality parts and workmanship. The Tannoy MX-2 is one of the best bargains in audio.
Follow Ups:
While I applaud all your efforts into upgrading the CD players circuitry, may I suggest a most important item that is not being addressed? If your AC is being distorted coming into the CD player, no amount of electronic manipulation can correct for it, save for onboard AC regeneration which no CD player I know of has.
Bang one of these onto the business end of your CD players power cord and prepare to be amazed :-)
No I am NOT kidding...........
You're not kidding, kenster. I used to use some pretty expensive cords, and the they were very effective in reducing the "grunge" factor. BTW, what "brand" of connector are we looking at in the picture? Have you also upgraded wall outlets?
Hi David,"BTW, what "brand" of connector are we looking at in the picture?"
That is an Oyaide P-046 in the picture.
"Have you also upgraded wall outlets?"
I have upgraded all of my AC receptacles in both the main system and the HT to Oyaide using different models in the Oyaide line to fine tune for different applications.
Cheers,
