I had a similar problem with Accuphase T-100 once and it was a defective MPX decoding IC. Look at the following link if you are not familiar with MPX.

Since this tuner is from 1986 would that IC part be readily available? Is it a common part?

likely just the vco pot next to the MPX IC needs adjusting. Seen it many times.

The Accuphase T-100 was made between 1973- 1982, earlier than Luxman T-102. I have 2 T-100 made in different years and they used different MPX IC's. You will have to look at inside of your tuner to determine which IC was used. The replacement IC likely will cost around $3 but then you will have to pay another $7-$10 for S/H.

For both of you I shot some pics of the internals. I can't see any specific IC that would indicate its a MPX IC. There are adjustments inside, but nothing near any chips. Here are the pics. Let me know what you see and any opinions on the parts used inside would also be welcome. Here is the page:http://www.geocities.com/shpickering/Luxman-tuner.html
Let me know on where the IC chip is and also where I would do some adjusting as recommended.

There are two white pots in the upper left hand corner of the board, above a metal can.
Likely, one is for separation, the other VCO. If I had to guess, I'd say the left one is VCO. Carefully and accurately mark their current position with an ultrafine sharpie pen. Then start with the left one, rotate it slowly fully L then fully R. If it does nothing for stereo, return to it's former postion and try the other. When you find the correct pot, put it at the center point of the two spots where you lose stereo operation.
Good luck, and be sure to report back if it works.BTW, I do this for a hobby only, I don't work on tuners for $ as a biz.
I tried the tuner again today and suprising- the stupid thing went to stereo right away. This is frustrating as you never know when it will or will not work. Needless to say I took the cover off and turned the 3 pots in the area of the chip while the tuner was on. Nothing happened what so ever while turning the pots. It never went out of stereo. I might just leave it at this point and save up for the Rotel RT 1084 down the road. Its working for now.

What you encountered can also be explained by poor FM reception. How did you hook up your FM antenna? Try to move your antenna around, or better yet take both tuner and antenna outdoor and try it. If the stereo light goes up when you test it outdoor, the problem is not in the tuner.I would guess that the one on the upper left hand corner is the IC that does MPX decoding. On the Accuphase T-100, there is a VR around the MPX decoder for L/R balance adjustment. I don't know anything about what might be used in the Luxman.

The reception is fine because my car stereo pics it up fine, plus a receiver I have has a good strong reception. The lights on the Luxman show all 5 bars lit up for signal strength. It doesn't matter what station it is, the stereo mode is flaky.

Another useless feature!
Not always, no, but very common!

Here's an addenda. I was able to get it to go into stereo yesterday and it stayed in stereo. But once I powered off the unit and turned it back on, it started in mono and would not go into stereo.

Just a note- there are 4 pictures on that webpage. If they all dont show up, check again in 1 hour. Its a Yahoo site that has a limit on bandwidth use.
