I have to disagree. I bought some EI 12ax7's years ago to use in a CJ pv8. I bought 6 since I had heard scuttlebutt about their unreliability. It was true. I bought 6. Four of them went noisy within hours. Two were usable. They sounded okay, but nothing special. They certainly didn't compare with nos Tele's that I got shortly thereafter. The Tele's sounded more powerful, more full bodied, yet clearer in detail.
LowIQ
My pre uses 4 of them. All tested, selected by CAT.
In twelve years never ever had one even so much as hiccup. Quiet as stones.
...had the same problem finding good EI's many years ago, maybe 25?
The ribbed plate Tele's had a much greater consistency, and sound wise, for many years, they were the standard go to 12ax7. Same with the smooth plate.
The EI's had great promise as a replacement but didn't fulfil that.
12AX7 in my Elekit 300B amp right now.
The trick with Ei tubes is buying from a vendor who takes returns if tube becomes noisy, which tends to happen to quite a percentage of them, but the ones that survive the initial days/weeks seem to last just as long as other brands..

"Still Working the Problem"
While cleaning crap out, I pawed through a box of "not the real thing" tubes. These were in there. I never looked into them until this week.
They're decent tubes? Most of my experiences with non-USA tubes have been with Telefunken, Mullard and Amperex.

Yep.
Good tubes. Very good tubes.
Use them in my CAT preamp.
