Of course speakers can go bad. These are man-made devices. What man-made device lasts and works forever--never needing adjustment or repair or restoration?
As materials age they can change regardless of whether or not they are used, how they are used, stored, etc. Foam surrounds rot, voice coil wires can fray and short, grommets can dry out over time and fail.
