Hi there,
i've been told that OTL's are wonderful with stats... true?
I recently bought a Quad 63 and maybe OTL is the way to go.
The only OTL i've heard was a Berning, but i was at the begining of this madness and didn't know what i was hearing... i wanted bass and dynamics and fireworks and .... you know the drill.
Thanks and best regardfs

Follow Ups:
Hi,Been using Transcendent T8 stereo with 63's. It has been an eye opening experience, great depth, speed, incredible bass and you hear everything. The last comment is good and bad. Modified every other component, the T8 OTL didn't seem to color, passed everything along.
Don't get me wrong, Quads are wonderful wonderful speakers, probably my second choice in the whole world, but if you want "dynamics and bass" you might never be satisfied with an ESL. ESLs deliver coherence (if it's not a hybrid design) and the ultimate in transparency, but have problems, relative to big honking electrodynamic speakers, with just those areas you cite (dynamics and bass). The large full-range Sound Labs speakers are the best ESLs available for those two qualities, IMO. There are a number of hybrid speakers (ESL midrange paired with conventional woofer) that attempt to get around this problem by combining the two technologies, but I have never heard one of those designs yet where the cross-over between panel and woofer was not easily audible. Otherwise, I've said it before that OTLs and ESLs are a match made in audiophile heaven. Despite what I've written, I encourage you to go for a full-range ESL and match it with an OTL of your choice. Get the largest panel area you can afford for best bass response; it's a simple matter of math and physics.
Thanks Lew, i really left those priorities behind, i love my Quads and want the best amplification i can have for them to shine.
Thanks again and best regards

Years ago I've been at a Dealer Demo, he used Quads 63 with an Amplifier from FM Acoustics.
This was the absolute most brutal demonstration with Quad ESL I EVER listened.
Power and Speed without any Limit and a Bass, unbelievable.
This destroyed everything I heard about Quads. They can rock like hell, when you have such a monster for amplification.
In my opinion, most amps are not good enough for these ESL, even their own Quad Amps are nice, but not more.
This is a non-cryogenically treated Signature
Hi,I use a Berning ZH270 on the USA monitors and the ESL 57's. I also used a completely done over Futterman H3...which removes layers of haze but can be a bit grainy and does not have the bass of the Berning. I have tried the Atma M60 and S30.
If you want slamin' bass to the extent that the Quads are capable try the Berning. Some would argue that the Berning's not a OTL in the truest sense..but I'll not wind that one up again!
The Berning is one incredible amp for its form factor. I've got a lot of admiration for Berning's implementation of technology in that product. Berning is currently ramping up to produce some very expensive monoblocks using similar technology to the ZH270, but with far more robust power supplies ,stiffer chassis and better parts. Get your wallet out for those!
Thanks AJ, i cannot afford it now, but i assume you liked the Berning beeter than the Atmas?
Thanks again and best regards

Hi,The atma's and Berning are different. The Berning having better, more "solid" bass in my system. The atma's , quite frankly, did not warrant me giving up on my hot-rodded Futterman.
The atma's chassis was an odd size, ran too hot and had too many tubes to worry about. The Berning weighs about 10lbs, auto biases (believe me a treat after living with the Futterman!)and has the option of a bit of feedback, something the electrostat panels like along with a volume control and two inputs.
I just think the Berning is a brilliant design and is more practical than the atmas ,for me, personally.
Having said all that I've been running a SET since the late summer, a Wyetech Topaz, and it too has its virtues on the Quads. Don't ask which I like better!

The Topaz does an incredible job with the ESLs its no ordinary SET!
Hello,ESL's and Quads are Great!! I have ESL57's and they are very magical with otl's. I use Prodigy otl's (Futterman variant with great build and parts quality) and love the sound. I have also used and owned the Transcendent T8 stereo. Very fast and good base I found this one cold though.
There is always a give and take though. Don't go with just an OTL. If you can audition one try a good Push-Pull like VTL MB-150 (uses 807's I think) or Musical Reference (the one that uses 6550's) It sounds Great with the 63's.
Simon
Thanks Simon,
indeed i was told that music reference and quads are a winning combo.
I cannot afford any for now, so i´m doing a research, and for now i have these as a short list:Music Reference RM200
Atma-Sphere M60
Berning 270
Quad II-40
Gamut D200(SS)
Accuphase A-30(SS)
Any Joule as a sugestion? or any other?
Thanks again and best regards
