  The Velvet Lounge has been a fave of mine but I haven't been to the new Velvet Lounge yet. You could also try HotHouse, Andy's, the Green Mill plus places like the Empty Bottle, Hotti Biscotti and Gallery Cabaret that sporadically book jazz. It is a great music town.
  If I had to live in one of our ten or twelve largest cities I would pick Chicago in a heartbeat despite the weather.
