I picked up a pair of these locally, just for kicks.
After all, we KNOW Sansui is "junk", right ?
Wrong!
These things are efficient, musical and effortless, and image very well, believe it or not.
Maybe they image so well because of the vertically oriented horn, or the directional midrange cone driver array ?
Yes, they are colored, having a kind of "Wurlitzer" sound on lower range of some male voices.
I am playing with stand height to minimise this.
They pack a big midbass sound, perfect to blend with my big subwoofers.
They are excellent on Rock and Disco.
Great sounding on Eva Cassiday's Live album.
When she sings "Blue Sky" it is very live sounding.
AC/DC and Ozzie Osborne are reproduced with power and no edge.
These are very easy speakers to live with, and don't run you out of the room like many Klipsch I have owned.Like I said, I JUST got these a few days ago.
At the moment, I am only using a little Parasound HCA 500 50 watt amp plugged into a big Powervar.Havent even tried my Luxman M 117 or my Moscode 600.
IF I can figure out a way to shut up the box, or damp the rear wave of the driver w/o screwing up box tuning, these could be special.
If you look at the picture, you can see this is a Horn speaker.
That vertical horn is NOT a Piezo, and there is a radial horn tweeter. The dual midrange array combined with the vertical horn makes these directional, a GOOD thing.
Just like any horn speaker, you can move em towards or away from you to get the balance just right.I opened em up to tighten and clean all connections.
The WHOLE cabinet is felt lined. The crossover is hard to get to, and I am itching to re cap em.
I just wanted to add this info to the knowledge database.
These can be had quite reasonably.I think I actually prefer them to the Klipsch Forte's I owned in some ways.
They do not go as deep in the bass, but they are not as "on the edge" in their voicing either.
The lower midrange "Wurlitzer Coloration" bugs me sure, but I find it far preferrable to the edginess of the Klipsch on some material.
I can listen to these for hours LOUD, and walk away refreshed.
Ok, so they will not challenge my B&W Matrix 801's for "audiophile" stuff like low coloration, and transparency.
But I enjoy these, especially for how little I paid for them.My advice ?
If you ever find a paid locally cheap, grab em, and give them an honest listen.
You MAY find yourself re thinking your opinion of Japanese speakers.

I don't think there are many fans here of these vintage Sansui speakers but I like them. They do have there problems but the crossovers are will engineered, the drivers are good quality and the cabinets are solid. Samsui was the distributor for JBL in Japan and it appears they copied some of the driver technology. I sold Klipsch in the 80's and I agree the Sansui coloration is less disturbing than the Klipsch edgyness. Sansui speakers can be base shy. These speakers are pelntyful and inexpensive. Enjoy!

But a punchy mid bass.
I have a pair of dedicated corner mounted 9.5 cu ft subs.
They use car stereo 15" drivers with long X Max in a sealed box.
The driver I am using is a Cadence Wild Best, a Kevlar 15" driver.
I designed em to go flat only down to 35 HZ with a q of .6
Room and corner gain takes over from there, and they are fast, powerful, and fairly efficient.
I have 1500 watts on each one.
So the punchy mid bass of the Sansui serves me well.
The Sansui's can often make me say "Wow", and shake my head in disbelief.
They image all over the place, even w/o any tubes in the system.
I NEED tubes, BUT, my solid state preamp has remotely controlled sub level, and I am using it's crossover for the subs.
i HAVE a tube pre amp, but after using a pre amp with remotely controlled sub level, there is no going back for me.
I had NO earthly idea just how important proper bass level really is.
And w/o remote control, you must get up and set it for every recording.
Unless you are willing to compromise bass level.
I am not.
Powerful subs like mine need to be set exactly, orthey sound like crap.
The "purist" in me will not allow using a tube amp with a solid state pre amp, lol
Maybe i will haul the Tube Dac out, but I swear it sounds so good now i am just enjoying it.
Not since my BELOVED old EV Interface D's have I had a speaker that can Rock like these can w/o fatigue.
And sound pretty good, and even spectacular at times doing it.
Colored they are, but pretty smooth, with moments of magick.
I wanna damp the horn with caulk, and that dam crossover is a bitch to get to.
These have gotta need caps ?
They were made in 1976 !
I was 21 years old then, LOL
In 76 I was 19! It is not done often but there is nothing to say that you cannnot run a tube amp with a SS preamp. That sub sounds like it takes care of the base problem.
I have had problems with the caps in the smaller Sansui speakers but not the bigger. They are all electrolytic so it is probably safest to change them.
Dave
Yeah, I PLAN to swap em out, problem is HOW to pull these crossovers, LOL
I don't know that partiular model but in my multi-way Sansui Speakrs, that do not have bolt on backs, the crossover is behind the woofer.
