I think the alternative would be, hum, horn loading the drivers?
As in, using them as they were designed to be used?
And not with silly waveguides?
That might be it.
Jonathan
Am I missing something?
This is a PA horn, much like a refined Altec A-7.
A good Job.
Also who among you has made an elliptical Tractrix horn...a very good idea, where is the last time you have seen one of these?
I can tell you...never.
Sometimes I just don’t get it.
This would be a very clear PA box.

Such revered drivers in such an under-utilized effort. I'm sure they sound far above average, but far far short of their potential as well.

what would be a good alternative?
or two
While RCA Fan correctly points out that these would be a great PA design, and that the eliptical Tractrix horn would probably have good pattern control, the design would still have all the limitations of two-way pairings of essentially direct radiators with a horn.
And since the bass/midbass section is also ported it had a significant amount of distortion designed into it as a means of extending bandwidth.
I like multiway horns. In the design posted, the midrange will have to be padded down somewhere between 12 and 18db to match the output of the bass section. IIRC, the GOTO units have claimed sensitivity of 118db 1w/1m. What is the point if one is just neutering the driver to match it with a driver with substantially lower output: Just mate the bass section to a good ribbon and simplify the crossover in the process.
The downside of multiway systems are they are larger, not so easy to package and more difficult to integrate. The upsides are dramatically improved dynamics, frequency extension and nuance.
The design is the post could likely be matched by one of RCA fan's Ah! systems, a good Altec A5 derivitive, or one of many similar two-way designs. And it could be done for a fraction of the cost. It would lack a certain amount of "Gee-Whiz" factor however: I would rather be $10,000+ ahead than have the gee-whiz factor in this case.
RCA Fan put it best when he stated that they would make a great PA design. I take that to mean pro-sound reinforcement over high fidelity. And like I said, I'm sure they sound far above average, but far short of their potential as well.

in this system, the tweeter SG-16TT has 110db, the mid horn driver SG-505TT has 110db,and the bass GOTO 38 WNS has 108db, that meens almost no sensitivity difference of the drivers. it is a 3way system.
Theoretically, just add a mid-bass driver, make it 4 ways, with crossover
at 200/1000/5000hz would be ideal.
What remains is the mess of the design.
Angelo
The 505TT IS a lower mid/bass driver designed to work from 200Hz -1kHz.There is no way the horn he coupled it to will reach so low
Goto drivers have 2 setbacks.1.They are relatively narrow bandwith devices.2.They are very fragile. If this instalation uses a 505 crossing over to a 16 TT he is operating the 505 way out of range and likely crossing over to the tweeter way below the recommended 6k.Both recipes for disaster. Now if he used the 370 driver all of the above objections would vanish.
Goto drivers are magnificent if used correctly with no pissed and vomited upon ex pro rustbucket coming close. What irritates is people hearing incorrectly applied Gotos and then reacting by dismissing them as jokes.

And I imagine your system does indeed sound splendid, using the units in their intended bandwidths and carefully so.

No,nothing is perfect least of all my system. But I tell you I'll rather use a Goto driver as recommended than blow one from incorrect use.On the few occasions I blew one I got such a reprimand from Goto it felt like Miss Fosters pre primary class all over again! Not nice if you are 45 years old and at the peak of your career to have an irate little Japanese man going at you.My crime was using a highly regarded 300B SET amp on the tweeters.Apparently this thing ultra sonically oscilated thus blowing the tweeters .The Japanese Goto agents went to the trouble of actually sourcing an amp for me that they felt happy with
But it does show you the tremendous pride these people take in their product-Same happened when I cracked the Onyx body of my Koetsu-They fixed it for free but only after a hell of a tongue lashing.
of course, i know your system.
