Hi
anyone have any advice on comparisons between the above two drivers for a back loaded horn? Which would people prefer if they either of them, and why?
I have built a modified Olson Back loaded horn (please see post some 2 months ago), but haven't been able to find a single solution to my mismatched drivers that I have (one 385 HPD, and one monitor gold).

i did not have good results with tannoy gold in a grf. i got ouf of control bass when i tried it. however, tannoy reds/silvers sounded good in grf. ohter speakers that sounded good in blh were jensen, rca lc1a, stephens. blh are tricky. i would not just plop drivers in and hope for the best.
i prefer altec speakers in altec horn cabinets or sealed box or wall-mounted-infinite baffle or ported altec spec-ed boxes.

I just sold my coveted GRF's and have gone the Altec route. Looks like your boxes are similar to a GRF. Anyhow, the Altec sound is more upfront/dynamic with bigger dynamics to the vocal/ swings. The Tannoy sound is more laid back and extremely hard to beat on vocals. If you want a more concert live type speaker, go Altec. If you want a pleasurable and smooth speaker, go Tannoy. Either way, you really can't lose. You could also drop some JBL drivers down low, and say a 175/185/375 up top. Same with Altec, driver down low and horns on top.
What about Electro Voice 15TRXB? How do these compared to Altec 604-8G and Tannoy 15" Golds?
Doesn't have the midrange, high-end rolls off pretty low (10Khz on some versions), fragile tweeter, and I find the tweeter irritating.

Did you use Eminence 15"s?
Harmonic distortion looks relatively low.
Did the thermal patents do anything?

Not much. The EVs are not PP, and there are two seperate enclosures, mine share a common back volume. My form factor was 36" wide vs the EV being 22.5", same basic size, but easier stacking.

You can use any woofer that is quiet from the back side, I use mostly Eminence.

I don't consider in excess of 3% at 60hz as being particularly low. It will drop by and order of magnitude in push-pull.

The extended pole helps with heat, and the teflon on the poles reduces arcing when the coil expands with heat. Having said that, I don't generally use EV woofers (except 12s for horn loaded mids).

The open chamber is tuned (read your other post)- Olsons book has the equation for this from memory?
-Not liking the bulk of pipey 0.5pi horn,considering DTS-20 inspired tapped horn(diyaudio.com thread)- but strange 2metre long shape harder to transport.
