I'm driving myself nuts trying to get a nice balanced sound out of my JBL's. I have set both controlls just a bit below center but man are they bright!! Don't get me wrong, I think these are fantastic speakers, but I was wondering what others who have these and the L100's have their controlls set at. Most music is acoustic or fusion jazz, with a little canterbury prog thrown in for good measure.
Follow Ups:
Like some other JBL products of the time, they did exhibit volume dependency. I.E. they got up on more power/volume ... 'coming alive' was/is the classic description. Though I myself, didn't have the pockets for the receiver (though I did manage to scrounge the dosh for the speaks, in my teens). I heard them sound best at the time, fronted by a Marantz 2270. Rocked the large room at the old (wisp, wisp) Pacific Stereo on Lankershim. The year was nineteen hundred and ....
Mine are in the middle - 5 and 5 (out of 10) - and sound fine; quite punchy in fact. They are in the corners of a very small room though ... :^)
I could never get the L36 to sound right.
On an L100 set the tweeter to noon and back off the mid to about 9 o'clock.
The L16/L19 with a sub sounds better, much better mids and tonal balance.
