Hello,
I have read great stuff about the low compression rate Community M200A drivers and consider trying a pair.
The specified frequency range for these drivers is 400-4000. I would like to take these as low as possible where my straight bass horns will take over and will use a 1" driver above. Based on the graphs, the M200A's Fs=300 Hz.
Question:
Has anyone tried using these drivers down to 300 Hz (or maybe lower?) and can this be recommended for home use (not PA)?
I intend to use active 24 dB/octave crossovers.
I thank you a lot in anticipation!
Kind regards
Peter

hello Peter
i understand that to go the way Avantgarde goes with the community and the beyma is a winning and attractive design, and you want improove your system, and think replace the bms could give better results. however : the bms does best exactly what the community does : the midrange. the weak part of your system is the mid-bass, and high frequency section. i would make a rectangular tractrix mid-bass horn , wich is not so expensive, and use a Ciare 8.5 Nd MR, wich you can get cheap at great plains audio, disconnect the tweeter of the bms. the jbl 2405 ore beyma copy do a very good job, you can use it above 7khz. you will not spend a lot , but improovement of yous system will be considerable. cutoff at 300hz is the worst, as you have the most music information at this frequency region. the best is to use a midbass channel that covers between 150hz and 1khz.

Hi Angelo,
Thanks for your reply. I have already disconnected the tweeter section of the BMS coax and replaced it with a vintage Fostex T828 slot tweeter. This was clearly an improvement although I had to pad the BMS mid somewhat down. I have also thought about the "midbass approach" and actually bought a pair of 8" Fane Studio 8M second hand for that purpose that I incidently stumbled across. However, building a, say 150 Hz, mid horn is no simple task - at least not to me:-)
Kind regards

hello Peter
than you are in the right direction. i bought a pair of jbl2405's, as they are a economic and good alternative to fostex tweeters, and also i have the original jbl crossover plan, so i can just utilise it for the tweeter network. i found also a fane studio8m, so my combination will be similar to yours. but i will replace the orphean horn completely.
i dont think, if you made you big basshorn, you will have much trouble to make a square mid-bass horn, it is not expensive. if you want to use a community driver, just write them, i did it, they do export without any problem.
best angelo
Hi Angelo,
The problem regarding the Community drivers may not be to get them (although I have heard that the M200A version has been discontinued) - but if I can't take them lower than 400 Hz (note my original post), then I doubt that my bass horns will sound good that far up in frequency.
Regarding making a pair of mid bass horns: To me it really is no simple task; I only drew the bass horns I have, I did not make them!
BTW: Do you have the Mk II version of the crossovers for the Orpheans?
Kind regards
Peter
. . ., where did you find them, I am looking for the Community VHF100?
M
I have a pair of M200 for sale if interested $400 for the pair plus shipping ,,, Email maron000@centurytel.net or phone 573 672 3374
Hi Zako,
Thanks for the offer, but I am looking for the M200A's since they should have a lower Fs than the M200's.
May I ask how far down in frequency you have used the M200's , and what is your impression of these drivers? Thanks!
Kind regards
Peter
Hi M,
You can get most of their drivers at what appears to be good prices via the link below. However, I do not know whether they sell outside the US. Otherwise do a search for Community Light and Sound, and you will find the community website from where sellers can be located.
Kind regards
Peter
