Hi folks,
just trying to pick some brains here.
Family is building a new cabin way up northern NH and we are going to
need a very simple and cheap system.
So my thoughts lean to a t-amp and a pair of Fostex FE166E's in a bass reflex enclosure.
This will replace the 20 yr old magnavox boombox which as you can imagine
does not provide much in the way sound fidelity.
Placement will of course be in the worst possible place, on shelf 6" from wall and simple is the key as my mother-in-law is a complete technophobe (the ipod we got her has been used about twice- once by her, once by me for sound fx for her high school musical!) so a reboxed t-amp with on/off vol control will be enough.
So if anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear them!
Thanks,
Seamus.

Thanks for the advice, folks.
I'm going with the 167's and may even try veneering for the first time!
Cabin will be done by the middle of September so I have a few weeks.
I'll post some pics when its all done.
Any thoughts on mdf v birch ply?
Thanks again,
Seamus.
I can vouch for the FE-207E in a BR :-)
all the best,
mrh
If the cabin is in a nice wooded area and has a fire pit I would sugest a reasonable pair of outdoor speakers properly positioned on available trees. A wooded environment provides some of the best acoustics and make even cheap speakers sound great!! In this case the Fostex line would most likly fail because the great outdoors needs more power and Xmax.
Maybe try the Yorkville 8"\horn outdoortypes for about 250.00 pr. If you plan it right add a 150.00 Parts Express 12" subwoofer. Get a vintage 70s reciever, Kenwood, Pioneer, Yamaha, etc.

I would change that to a 167e in a bass reflex box rather than the 166e because it works better in a bass reflex cabinet overall. Enjoy the cabin!
