I like mine a lot. When I first listened to them (driven by a elcheapo SS receiver) at the sellers home, They sounded a little rugged but promising. I wrote the hardness off to the fact that the amplification was not ideal to say the least. When I got them home and hooked them up to a Sherwood 6BQ5 integrated I was exteremly happy with my purchase.
I didn't do much with them for the longest time because I already had something that I was reasonably pleased with. My set-up is active x-over with biamp (tubes) and I was using various bass enclosures and drivers. My thinking at the time was to build my own enclosures and use the single JBL 2225H I owned and keep looking for another. If finally dawned on me that I had a great sounding horn loaded enclosure with the dixielanders just sitting there collecting dust and they might work very well for what I was trying to accomplish.
I ended up removing the horn and compression driver and just bypassing the existing x-over so that it could be used in my system. Not sure about yours, but mine were more of a "utility" cab. that had seen a few coats of black paint. A little rough around the edges from a cosmetic standpiont to say the least. A audio friend of mine who had more experience in veneering cabinets offered to bring them to his shop and help me to dress up the cabs with a nice mahogany veneer so that what I ended up doing.
They turned out very nice and like I said, Im very pleased using mine this way. It still floors me when I listen to the clean refined bass that driver puts out in that funky cabinet design.
Yes, I saw your old posts on Audio Karma.
Mine are utility cabinets, blackish gray, with the big Frazier, Inc Logo.
They also came with hooks in them at no extra charge, LOL
The hooks were to suspend them behind the screen of the Cleveland Ohio movie theatre they came from.
Mine have the funky wirs hooking the horns up to the gray colored compression drivers, and their wooden exponential horns.
Loooks like an Akltec driver ?
One speakers tweeter level is a bit higher then the other.
Haven't been inside yet, buy was told a variable resistor is in there, and one sets it by ear ?
I looked at your internal pictures, and see what appear to be some old Electrolytics ?
These gotta go, they are ancient.
What mods did you make to yours ?
These little bastards are insanely musical.
My extreme highs are really rolled off, might be caps, bad connections.
BTW, I bought 4 of these, gota go back and get the other two.
Alas, my girlfriend is moving in, and I will probably be selling these, my VMPS RM 40's, My B&W 801's, My two pairs of Von Schweikerts and most of all I own.
I am going to a Home Theatre system with a receiver only.
I just bought two boats, plus I am a Ham Radio Operator.
Something has to go, so goodbye Audio, for awhile ?
A shame really, bwecause I really would have liked to tweak these ?
I also have some Gollehon wooden horns, some Altec 421 a's, some 15 inch JBL white woofers, just too dam much stuff, LOL
I love my girlfriend, and she likes to stay home, and watch movies.
She did make it clear that IF she moved in, she can't stand to have the house "torn up" with audio project in every room.
WTF is wrong with women anyway ?
Oh, for the record, they sound great with my Luxman M 117, a really great sand amp BTW.
I LOVE the sound of the paper woofer in these Dixielanders.
Jack Frazier spent a lot of time I was told getting the Paper right.
IMHO, people should seek these out, if for nothing more then a decent bass bin for whatever horn/driver combo the might want to use.
They are small, efficient, and easy to mount stuff on top of.
The driver goes up past 1000 k, and I bet several good horn/driver combos could be used up top.
NOT that the stock Altec looking driver is bad anyway.

She likes my Big Infinity IL 60's the best, looks wise because the subwoofers and everything is "all in one place"
I have several big receivers, an Onkyo 989, a JVC RX DP 9, some JVC and Panasonic digital ones, and an old Pioneer top of line with bamboo capacitors.
i WILL at least keep a tube dac!
I made no modification to mine other than the bypass of the internal x-over, removing the horns and cleaning up the cabs. They seem to have differing horns and drivers through out the Dixielander run. I have come across two versions and have seen the literature that shows the Dixielander as more of a enclosed cabinet with grillecloth.
The Horns/drivers that were with mine were not too shabby at all but my plans included a different combination.

I have a big livingroom with my horn-speaker projects all over the place but only in that room, my wife and I like to see a lot of films, I have a computer projector aimed at the wall behind my horn speakers, stereo only of course. Depending on the project I am playing with at the time we watch a bigger or a smaller projection on the wall. She understands that this is a package and audio comes with me!
You can mix Home Theater with a High End Audio system.
is you are totally P whipped. She is moving into YOUR house and has already gained control before even packing her bags. Good grief man, get ahold of yourself. Be the MAN of YOUR Castle. If she doesn't love you enough to allow you to enjoy a hobby you love IN YOUR OWN HOME, you should rethink the situation.

I really do have more stuff then I need.
I get so much into stuff, I become obsessed.
It's not just her, I need to say goodbye to some audio toys for awhile.
My house is really cluttered.
The speakers I am keeping for a combo audio video system are no slouches.
They are smooth and musical, so I will not be w/o music.
if you are happy, who am I to complain. I hope it all works out with the GF. There are few things that can make a person happy like a good mate. I wish you much happiness.
