I finally got a chance to hear the ZU Druid, after all the positive and negative talk about them. Well they had it hooked up to a 2a3 PP putting out about 12 watts.Let me tell you they are a nice sounding speaker. Smooth defined bass with great midrange and nice high end. I had been listening to speakers all day from Omega, Vandersteen, Wilson and some other $45,000 speaker and these held their own.
Now the omega, I was not impressed at all.
Then I come home and listen to my home made Fostex 166 horn and relaze what I have. Not as open as the Zu. But with my Fi 2a3 I'm very happy. I would love to hear the Zu in my system.
I was suprised with all the vinyl at the show.

Sorry if this is a little of topic, but what about the Omega did you not like? Their new hemp-based models have been getting rave reviews - on their own forum (do not get me started).Do you think your dislike is due to the hemps or their implementation (ie. BR - perhaps not the most appropriate way of loading wide-range drivers?); other system issues or break-in maybe?
Anyhow, I am just interested in your observations and thoughts. Oh, I am no Omega supporter or detractor, so no flames from me whatever your response ;^)
I heard the Omegas at the show and I thought they were a bit thin. I've only recently gotten into full range speakers, and the ones I've built have no right to be any good. But when I heard the Omegas I thought I'd like them more but found them to have a signature similar to mine, and mine are built with Radio Shack 40-1041 5" drivers in a cardboard Metronome box. They were better than mine, but some of the deficiencies that I hear were in the omegas as well, weak bass and a generally thin sound. Surprisingly so considering their 8" driver. I was hoping a properly built speaker would have a bigger sound.I was listening to my Metronomes tonight for a while and kind of liking them but then switched back to my Proac clones and the clones just blow them away. I'll have to build a real cabinet for the Metronomes, and then maybe get some Fostex 108 sigmas for it. Whether or not they're any good they'll go to my kids anyway.
your experiences. The hemp-based Omegas are, according to their forum members, more tonally fleshed out and able to handle dynamics 'better' than their Fostex-based predecessors...Seems to me that a modified or ES Fostex in a BLH(ish), BIB, or perhaps a BVR may be more to my liking than a hemp in what is, when all the gloss is stripped away, a standard bass reflex... I am not convinced a standard BR is the way to go (for me) for smallish FR drivers; Feastrex and other big $$$ drivers may be the exception.
I am surprised the 8" hemps sounded thin tho; these have been highly touted as tome-monsters, admittedly by some pretty excitable (tho well-intentioned) folks. Perhaps it was the room or upstream equipment; who knows? Hmmm, interestingly there has been no discussion of this show on either the Omega or RWA forums…
Anyhow, thanks for sharing. It is also great that you have a different type of 'speaker as reality-check / tool for comparison; it helps keep things in perspective. Your feedback helps fill-out my own thinking WRT future projects etc.
Thank you again
Raymond
Some of the best sound in the show. I think the midrange suffered in most rooms with anything but tiny speakers, in a better set-up (non hotel) I think the speakers would be real contenders for the elusive single driver all purpose speaker (Single driver? There is a second driver for the bass - I'm not a technical person, particularly after three days of gear hopping). The bass was extremely tight, some of the most defined and "musical" tympani I've heard - even given the limits of the room. But more to the point, with the Art Audio amp, the there was a musical presence in the room.
By way of contrast I liked the $26,000 Vandersteens because they seemed to be able to play anything effortlessly (maybe a strange way to put it?), but the sound did not have the presence of the Rethm (the single driver box trade off). There were so many speakers that had harsh highs and this obscured a lot of other virtues and effected my appreciation of the speakers. It maybe the rooms, but I tend to think that it's a taste issue as well.

Its hard to remember all the speakers I herd. But one thing for sure, is if a manufacturer cant get his equipment to sound good in a hotel room he shouldnt put it on.I was very disapointed with the Vandersteens and Wilsons, and I'm sure it was the room. The wilson sounded like Frank was singing on the floor.
I was most impressed with some Knock off LS3/5 some guy was selling for $500 and the Bolzano Villetri speakers - that had dual 6" woofers and Dual 1-1/4" tweeters all aimed at themselfs in a Tall cabinet that was open in the middle. I thought those were some of the best sound at the show.
I totally agree, the druids playing off the melody PP 2a3 amp sounded lovely...I told my wife that these are up for sale a lot on audiogon, i assumed they must sound too bright for some. But in that room which had the all the sound absorption and wall to wall carpet, they were just nicely detailed, but never harsh. but wife said NO,cause there too tall...they did not have the smaller tones hooked up at the time.
When I mentioned they go for 2K used and I might try them, He told me if I by a used pr. Burn them in, beat them for a few days straight. In thier opinion they feel people sell them because their not broken in.All I know is they sounded great in that room with that amp.
Amen to that. BTW, I currently own the omegas. MP.
