I have found that the wire gauge effects on sound is pretty system dependent. I have found 12 GA Deulund to produce excessive and out of proportion bass, 16 GA Jupiter works much better.

Could the thicker gauge be doing the converse, improving the bass (lower resistance, improved damping factor) while rolling off the highs ? I just did a project where I used thicker gauge on the subs/bass (improved damping factor)) and thinner on the mid/highs to avoid the HF rolloff.

Yes, that's what I've heard. Again, i feel the choice of wire gauge is system dependent
