For Quadraphonic nothing can beat a discrete 4 channel Reel to Reel, but beware Quad Reel to Reel tapes sell for big bucks. As far as electronically processing Stereo to Surround Sound you may be disappointed as I have been disappointed in electronically processed Mono to Stereo. Mono recordings are best played in Mono and my guess would be Stereo recordings also would be best played in Stereo.
So it may be best to stick to Quad LPs and Reel to Reels and leave Stereo as Stereo.
