the "78rpm Record Dating Guide" on Ebay when it was cheaper(see link below). This book gives you the year of release for thousands of 78s based on label number or matrix number , but it will never give you the exact date(month and day) of an individual recording. There is another book that covers all of the American labels from 1891 to 1943 with color pictures, and it is called "American Record Labels and Companies" by Allan Sutton and Kurt Nauck.
I use the "78rpm Record Dating Guide" constantly, and I back that up with Google. If the record is on Google, you can usually find the actual recording date, place, and label. I am actually amazed how much is on the net, but I have been frustrated many times also. Unfortuantely, another good source for recording dates are the inserts from CDs or compilation CDs.
Have fun searching, Bill.
