Direct to platter or use mat?

First of all, sincere thanks to all who really helped in my decision to go for the Rega P9.
It has felt mat, very thin. I've never liked any mats compared to just putting the record directly on the platter. Anyone tried it with or without mat on the P9 and heard a difference?
