There are now countless spotmat variations. And likely as many theories about their performance, affect, effect. And what is the intended purpose of using one. And what is actually going on. Taking place. Among/between the stylus, record, and mat. Myself, LEAVING the platter entirely out of the discussion (platter damping vs record coupling).Last few weeks, I've been trying even further variations. And my current perspective is the/a spotmat is anything but lossy. To the contrary. Acting minimally on the record, and in turn the music. Setting it and the contained notes free. Free to soar. To caress the heart. Using fewer dots (now flying only ten polyurethane, and two more at center of different height/profile, with now thirty ounce decoupled passive weight), I sense the record is being stretched/stressed/tensioned/grabbed/coupled into a state of motionless firmament. Secure. And depending on record and vintage, can yield a somewhat glass like 'tink' with fingernail tap at leadout grooves.
These days, with neverending visual examination/experimentation and listening analysis, the vinyl tells me it is inherently strong. Requires little overall support, and used with the right (snarf) spotmat. Capable of some glorious music reproduction. My reservation about linear/hard mats relates to the imperfections in most every record. They aren't flat. Without vacuum, or peripheral with center clamping, they are often a breeze flappin'. Due to the unevenness/non uniform/dissimilar surface of a spot mat, I feel it's actually 'getting' more of the record (or say holding it better).
It is well long past time for me to actually hang up a virtual shingle, and market/add my leetle contribution to the bazillion other audio accessories, past and present. And actually no longer feel comfortable in discussions about all the various mats (without first changing my Asylum designation/registration [or being perceived as promoting my vaporware (nipplemat)]). I don't consider any one mat right or correct. But I would certainly be thrilled to hear greater than that which I am now daily treated to (I giss this is where someone sez I'll show you mine if you .... ).
Signed, gonna push for soon, on my teeny enterprise (keep my fingers crossed). And if successful, I might actually be able to one day go to Walliemart, and drop more than a twenty :-)
