Re: ? input sensitivity / gain required for dl-103r

Sensitivity doesn't tell you anything without knowing the reference to which the sensitivity applies. There is no standardization that I know of for a sensitivity reference. It could be one-volt or 500-mV or 250-mV, etc. Therefore, if you are comparing two different phono sections, their sensitivity specs might not be directly comparable.

On the other hand, if you know the reference for the sensitivity spec, it is quite easy to calculate the gain of the phono section. For example, suppose the reference is 100-mV and the sensitivity is 0.09-mV. The gain is simply:

20∙Log[ 100 ÷ 0.09] = 20•Log[ 1111 ] = 20 × 3.046 = 60.9-dB.

Consequently, you really need to know the gain of a phono section in order to make an intelligent decision as to whether it is compatible with your particular cartridge.

Normally, you want a phono section gain that produces about 300-mV from your cartridge's rated output. Since the rated output for the DL-103R is 0.25-mV, a phono section with around 61.6-dB gain would be just about optimal.

Each DL-103R comes with an individual test report in which its actual output is measured. My DL-103R has 0.29-mV output at 1000-Hz with a 47k-ohm load. This is essentially the unloaded cartridge output, which will drop to 0.254-mV for a 100-ohm load. Many people feel that 100-ohms is a reasonably nice sounding load for the DL-103R. Therefore, a 61 or 62-dB phono section is probably a reasonably nice choice for this cartridge. Actually, any phono section with gain between 58-dB and 65-dB will probably work well with this cartridge.

Good luck,
John Elsion
