I've had/used a 17F for several years and it has never 'shut down'. The fan seems to run whenever the turntable is running (i.e., when the turntable is rotating) and not just when the turntable motor is hot. You should be able to see the fan by looking through the grille on the left side of the unit.
Perhaps a call to the manufacturers would help you?
