Re: 103R and the power of persuation...

Give it a while to loosen up. I was underwhelmed with mine for the first 40 hours or so.

While many experiment with different loadings, I have maintained mine at 100 ohms and witnessed changes to its sound by other means. I have changed turntables and tonearms. It seemed to come more alive on a Thorens TD124 than it had on a Teres 145. The arm is an Express Machining RB250 (all the mods)

VTA:

The angle of the cantilever below this cartridge body isn't the same as most modern cartridges. It's about 15 degrees. A more common angle is 20 degrees. What this means is that VTA settings that have worked well for other cartridges may not apply with the 103R.

In the above photo I had the VTA set to what I thought was a dead-level adjustment. Sound was laid-back and uninteresting. Also the cartridge didn't have many hours on it when this photo was taken.

What I have found is that mine seems to start coming alive, soundwise, in a nose down attitude. Too much nose-down and it starts picking up surface noise, too little nose down angle and the sound goes laid-back and lifeless.

Above image is a Shelter 501 type 2. Compare the angle of the cantilever in this shot to that of the Denon. It's obvious and that should be a clue.

Just a few notes on what I've noticed while using the DL103R.
