Re: lp to cd comments and a question

This is a most interesting area: In response to your reply I am going to again review my own findings, this time in a single blind experiment (dragging in my long suffering but supportive wife!).

I have heard from many people whose ears I respect that 16/44 is indistinguishable from 24/96. And I've also heard from others whose opinion I value that a difference is easily audible which to date corresponds with my experience.

I'm willing to accept that both groups are right - so what's going on? Could it be that variables of human perception and/or audio systems account for the different results? I note with interest that your musically trained friend could not discern a difference. I've found that musically trained people tend not to be into 'audiophilia' (or audiomania!) being satisfied with lower resolution systems - I'm generalising her to make a point. I've always thought that it was because they did not need a high resolution system to 'hear' the music. A reasonable system that gets the tone right is all they seem to need. Similar to a scientist/engineer (you might resonate with this) who uses some measurement instrument, finds after a while they don't depend as much on the instrument because they have 'trained' their sensory perception sufficent to make the instrument redundant.

Anyway, to get back to topic - what about LP to LP variation? If you find the digital files instinguishable from the LP then a so called 'good pressing' should be audibly superior in digital form when compared to the digital file from a lesser pressing. Since "digital is digital" doesn't this open the door to anyone who owns a particular LP (hence license/lease)to obtain the best possible digital file copy? If so the market for used vinyl could improve - get any copy of an LP and then go acquire the optimal digital file corresponding to it!

I'm working hard on my hard disk music server :-)
