The only way I know is by feel. I agree that using that method is the road to madness. If you do choose to use the feel method I have found that adjusting the bearings slightly tight (just slightly) is best. Better a little friction than loose beearings that are audible. This is what I learned when I was fixing turntables and arms professionally in my high end repair shop.

That said I'll add that I have not used gimballed arms in my home system in over 35 years. I really don't like them because they are either too tight or too loose. If even slightly loose the bearings will rattle and you can hear the effect which is very ugly.

Knife edge, unipivot or air bearings get around the problem. But each of those can have their own breed of problems. To some extent it's a matter picking you poison. Personally, I prefer unipivot or air bearings.
