I've owned 2 Planar 3s and a P3. You won't hear how good this table is unless you have it on a good stand or wall mount. The arm is great for the price and it'll allow you to get into better cartridges without being completely short changed. A dealer I know has happy customers who have Planar 3s on wall mounts with $2000 cartridges attached. I had good results with a ClearAudio Virtuoso on a Planar 3.I'd rather listen to digital than to the ClearAudio, Sota and older VPI decks I've spent time with.
I'd get the P3 and a Denon cartridge. Get a nice phono section before bothering to upgrade either the Denon or the Rega.
