Re: Your LP is damaged/scuffed from the Card Inner Sleeve

The Eagles' reissue series is pressed and packaged in Europe. The delicate vinyl LPs, over which so much care has been lavished, are then placed in Card Printed Sleeves. If this is done roughly or without care [and I believe it is done by hand]your LP ends up with surface damage.

That is the reason your LP is scuffed. US pressed LPs do not suffer damage by being packed in printed sleeves because the vinyl is harder.

European vinyl is like Japanese vinyl, being softer and more prone to surface damage from inappropriate packaging. Many people here may not believe that, but it is fact! I have done my best to my avoid LPs that are packaged like this for nearly 27 years and when I saw those Eagles' reissues [and the dreaded card inners!!!] on the Diverse Vinyl stand at the Hifi Show at Heathrow last September, I passed.

In Germany, during the 80s, Warner provided a printed soft paper sleeve replicating the original US packaging and they polylined the inner sleeve also. This 'Euro Scuffing' problem has been highlighted by Acoustic Sounds in one of their adverts for Pink Floyd European reissues. I took up the issue with somebody who is close to Universal in Germany. He told me that Universal would not hear of using any packaging that deviated from standard, the standard being card inners. What hope have you?

I was surprised when I saw Michael Fremer's DVD supposedly showing us how to remove LPs from inner sleeves. The LP surface should never touch the paper or card inner sleeve if you want to keep it pristine. If you want hairlines, scuff marks and other damage, proceed as Michael demonstrates. Not for me, thank you.

Your problem therefore stems from lousy packaging. You would think that with all the obvious care and attention that went into these Eagles' reissues that WB/Rhino would at least have the intelligence to ensure that the purchaser obtained a perfect copy. I know one thing, it wouldn't happen in Japan and I love the Japanese for that! I can feel your frustration but the good people at Elusive Disc can do nothing about it, I'm afraid.
