Hi,Thanks all for the comments.. I had no intentions or burning desire to build a plinth for an idler much less a Garrard. It was not until I heard a Lenco at the home of a specialty SET amp manufacturer that I started to understand what the fuss was about. This past summer I heard that Lenco which was built by that infamous person on Audiogon who started that long idler thread. I guess we Canadians are gluttons for punishment...I ended up buying that SET amp and having a mind to build an idler..Maybe changing my whole view on audio. The Garrard almost fell into my lap this fall. I was not even looking
While I would not call myself a cabinetmaker, I like a challenge. When you don't have a proper shop ,even though you make all the templates and strive for accuracy... Things always fall out of adjustment slightly..Overall I'm pleased. The finish is natural spar varnish (6 coats) rubbed with a every increasing grit synthetic scotch type pad to cut the sheen every so slightly and give an even touch to the finish.I hate poly type finishes, they look "fake" and have no charm whatsoever. I have little patience for finishing and lost even more applying the veneer...not for the faint of heart! especially 'round thiose corners.
I mocked up the rig before commiting to it and it certainly had that cliche quality of pace and bass solidity...I have no idea what the finished product sounds like yet...it may be a dud?!! I had fun making it and will be spinning maybe this weekend or for sure by next weekend. Although, this evening I'm relaxing as the snow is piled up about 3' high outside.
I show a pic of the plith in the fall before any finishing took place.
