An RB300 makes a nice combo

I have a Mk III with an modified RB300 -- it's been rewired and has the drop counterweight. This is a real nice combo. For some time I've thought I'd upgrade the tonearm on it. So, I bought a nice Origin Live Silver for it. Surprisingly, the OL Silver (which sells for nearly $1000) was not audibly better than my current tone arm. So I sold it and went back to the RB300.

The OL Silver was a very nice Tonearm. The bearings were somewhat smoother feeling, but the wiring was not as nice as the wiring on my RB300. So overall I felt I was giving up too much with the Silver. My RB300 has one wire all the way from the cartridge clips to the phono output and very nice wiring at that. It's the "eXprssimo" wiring.

Also, I think if I needed a new armboard, rather than pay VPI $80 for one, I'd make one out of a nice hardwood -- or find a nice 1/2" thick piece of black Plexiglas and have it drilled to match the existing. An nicely sanded and oiled hardwood might look great in place of that black plexi board.

OH, there is one more thing you can do... you can flip the armboard around and drill the blank side of the existing armboard. This will leave an ugly SME shaped whole in the front of the armboard. But it is a low-cost option.
