marketers would call a tonearm that could track a 16 inch diameter transcription disc a 16 inch arm. A common nomenclature back in those days, I'd guess. However it results in confusion nowadays that we refer to a tonearms effective length to describe its nominal size.See above sales brochure as an example. In this example the 16 inch armboard they are referring to is really meant for a tonearm with an effective length of 12 inches (approx).
I'm not saying there weren't any tonearms with 16 inch effective length. Just that the 16 inch size was intended to describe the size of disc it could track.
