This bit of data, from a datasheet on a similar but bigger amplifier chip, shows what happens when the protection circuits kick in under inductive loading. It is EXACTLY what I see when driving the motor. I didn't realise it would clamp the output to the power rail under these conditions.This afternoon I tried mine into a resistive load, and got to about 15 watts before the protection circuits kicked in, but, because the load wasn't inductive, it looked more like the waveform given in most datasheets for my actual amp (they just don't show the inductive loaded result).
So, looks like I have to wait and get the better transformer you recommended. This DSE thing just does not work well backwards :-)
