I could actually talk about this for a long time because it is so important and fundamental. The performance is EVERYTHING. So many audiophiles try to find the "Holy Grail" with equipment( I am included in that group sometimes ). The " Holy Grail" is what you are talking about(the performance) and it can be very personal. There are recordings I listen to at least once a week. I seek out more and better copies of each one for the future. Many musicians spend their lives in persuit of those "moments" and make many sacrifies along the way. Not all starving artists suck. Our society has little to offer compared to Europe in the area of financial compensation and job security for artists. There are literally thousands of small Orchestras in Europe that provide a decent wage and benefits for their musicians. So in America we find many musicians who will not give up and end up living on the edge but are fairly happy because they are still in the hunt, living for those "special moments" that make it all worth while.
