Fluid damper:- not allways needed
Suppose that yr resonance frequency is not in a bad range, fi at 9 Hz. And that the resonance peak level is at 10dB or lower related to the level at 1 kHz. Than I see no reason for installing a fluid damper.
- can be rather harmfull to yr cartridge
Some carts have tension wires fastehed at the back side of the cantilever. It maintains a fixed location of the cantilever in the fwd/ aft direction and regulates the measure of internal damping of the cart. Since all restoring power coming from the external damper must enter the generator system along this tension wire, the damper introduces a energy flow which was not incorporated in the cart design by the technicians. Just like the rivets on the body panels of that hawain 737 the tension wire will break after a certain number of flextures. According the experiences of a vinyl guru in Friesland, somewhere beyond London, this accident will hit yr cart much sooner than you expect.
I really see no reason for introducing a fluid damper for musical reasons. IMHO it really must be seen as a correction for a bad rf or too little damping.
