Re: Rega turntables

The P1 was brought out to be an alternative to low-cost tables like the lower-end Projects which were undercutting the now discontinued P2. If you compare the P2 and P1, nothing much has changed except the RB250 is now replaced by the new RB100 with an Ortofon OM5e thrown in.

The RB300 and higher tonearms use higher tolerance ABEC7 bearings, while the RB100 and 250 use lower cost and consequently lower tolerance bearings.

The P1 also uses an MDF platter, which is less rigid than the glass platter on the P3. Also, the P3 uses a higher quality motor tuned to be vibration-free.

These differences, though seemingly small, are implemented where they matter most and actually make a significant improvement sound-wise.

If I were in your shoes, I would hold out for a P3 instead of the P1. As already mentioned, perhaps buying used might be a less painful option?
