I also thought about a 540p when I was deciding which phono stage to buy. But after reading several reviews and suggestions from this forum, I bought the 640p instead. According to just about everyone who has compared the two has said that the improvement in sound is worth the extra $70. I've been very happy with it. I bought mine from audioadvisor.com and bought a demo model which was marked down a little.
