Re: Inexpensive tonearm for Thorens TD125?

I'm currently running a Thorens 125 as my main tt. It has replaced a Thorens 124, which in turn replaced a Linn LP12. I'm sure the problem isn't your arm. (I have a TP-11 on a Thorens 165, and the bass is fine!)

I've used an SME 3012, an Audioquest PT-9 and, currently, a Hadcock 242, with Grado Platinum, Denon 103, Dynavector 20HX, and Dynavector Karat 17 2 (current) cartridges. Bass has varied with arms and cartridges, but since my extensive modifications to the turntables, it's been never less than adequate (I listen to classical and jazz, not rock, so this might make a difference.)

The important thing is that when I first got the 'table (with the 3012) it did sound thin--much worse than the 124 and the Linn. But I followed the suggested modifications in a recent Hi-Fi world, which involves a new plinth, damping the top plate and inner platter, and readjusting the suspension, and since then the 'table has been absolutely fine, no matter what arm I've used.

If you have already done the modifications, I'm not sure what to suggest over and above what others here have said. I'm sure, however, that getting another arm is not going to solve the problem, unless the TP-14 is damaged. The 125 sings with the Hadcock and Karat, although many would find it a bit bass light. I can live with that in the light of its detail, transparency and immediacy.

Good luck.

David
