Wouldan't it depend on the design of the turntable? It seems to me that unsprung tables that rely on high mass plinths for stability do better with the cover off since the vibrations that set up in the dustcover would get transferred to the plinth and then into the cartridge through the arm and platter. In effect the dustcover is directly coupled to the rest of the playback system.
Sprung tables that have a floating platter/arm system are much less affected by the dustcover because the vibrations then go into the base proper, which is decoupled from the arm/platter system to a high degree.
It would seem at some point the effect of greater feedback due to the cover being removed would become a bigger problem than the effect of vibrations making their way into the floating system and becoming audible.
A simple test might be to tap on the dustcover lightly while the arm is sitting in a record groove while the record is not spinning. Listen for the resulting sound through headphones. I'll bet a suspended system that is well decoupled from the remainder of the base and dustcover produces much less noise. Such a system might well be better off with the cover in place during play.
